Healthy Ageing - Midlife Nutrition and Wellbeing
Nov 02, 2025Did you know the average health span in the UK is 61 years of age, whilst the average life span is 82 and 78, for women and men, respectively?
This means the average person can expect to spend up to the last two decades of their lives with impaired health, mobility and/or mental cognition.
Last week I delivered a talk to the attendees of Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership's day encouraging over 55s in Hertfordshire to be more active and to "Live Longer, Better".
During my talk, we discussed the concepts of health span (as opposed to life span) and biological age, and how we can improve both to live longer, better.
I also shared my 5R's which focus on key aspects of nutrition and lifestyle for healthier ageing.
Of course, this is a wide-ranging topic with many nuanced considerations from nutrition and supplementation to lifestyle and movement. Ideally, we would be working on an individualised basis using data collated from functional testing, symptom tracking and a detailed case history to create a fully personalised and in-depth plan to address genetics, epigenetics and individual concerns.
However, there are some fundamentals that form the foundations of a healthy lifestyle and my 5R's summed these up in a succinct and practical way to enable those attending to implement simple but impactful changes today.
These 5R's generated an interesting discussion in the Q&A and I thought I would share them below to see what you think...
Remove - looking at the UPFs and sugar we need to eliminate from our diets, but also stress and the toxins we are exposed to daily.
Refuel - the key food groups to be focusing on to fuel the body to maintain energy and productivity
Replenish - why we need to consider micronutrients and their roles in optimising our health
Relieve - addressing chronic conditions before they impact our health and reducing the impact of inflammation
Rebalance - the lifestyle changes that can help reduce stress, improve cognition and general wellbeing as we age
